Lady Penguins Fall to No. 8 BYU-Hawaii

Sarah Bain provided senior leadership on Tuesday despite a 3-0 loss to the No. 8 team in the country, BYU-Hawaii.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team fell to BYU-Hawaii 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) in Pacific West Conference play on Tuesday evening at the Conlan Center.

While the Lady Penguins (6-13/4-7) dropped straight sets to the No. 8 team in NCAA Division II, they didn't go without a fight. Ashlee Sand played well in the middle and recorded six kills on .385 hitting. Junior Hannah Stocking-Siagkris led the Lady Penguins with seven kills and seven digs.

"Ashlee played hard," said Dominican Head Coach Gayle Stammer of her senior middle. "She fought for every point and Sarah Bain came in and gave us some energy."

Bain ran the offense for a good portion of the night and finished with 14 assists.

However, it was evident that BYU-Hawaii (15-2/10-0), who entered conference play without losing a single conference set, is nationally-ranked for a reason. After recording a season-high 17 service aces as a team versus Art U on Friday, Dominican was unable to place one. BYU-Hawaii found the floor six times off of service to preserve that streak. The Seasiders hit .500 in the match, led by Shih Ting Chen's 15 kills, followed by 12 from Lauren Hagemeyer.

The Lady Penguins head to Fresno Pacific University on Friday, Oct. 26 for a 7:00 p.m. match before returning home for the final home match of the season. Dominican plays Hawai'i Pacific University at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28. The team's four seniors – Bain, Sand, Katy Batchelder, and Skyler Moon – will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Live coverage – video, audio, and live stats – will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live. Dominican then finishes the 2012 campaign with four road matches.
