Lady Penguins Stifled by #14 Grand Canyon

Taki Te Koi and the Lady Penguins fell to No. 14 Grand Canyon on Wednesday in Phoenix.
Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. — The No. 1 defensive field goal percentage NCAA Division II team in the nation was waiting for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team on Wednesday.

They didn't make it easy on the Lady Penguins.

Grand Canyon University, the 14th ranked team in the country in this week's USA Today/ESPN NCAA Div. II women's basketball poll, limited Dominican to 13 points in the first half and 23 percent shooting for the game in recording a 71-29 Pacific West Conference victory in Grand Canyon's new 5,000-seat arena.

The Lady Penguins (1-13/0-4) were led by redshirt freshman Lauren Hyatt, who had a team-high eight rebounds and a  career- and game-high four blocked shots. Junior point guard Stephanie Carnes contributed a career-high five assists.

Senior Te Manu Whakataki "Taki" Te Koi topped Dominican scorers with six points. Sophomore Kayla Valentine had five points and netted the Lady Penguins' only 3-point shot of the contest. Dominican missed its other 15 shots from beyond the arc.

Maylinn Smith and Jallisa Butler paced the Antelopes (11-1/3-1), who shot 38 percent from the floor and outrebounded the younger Lady Penguins 57-32, 23-12 on the offensive end. Grand Canyon, which came into the game with the second best defensive scoring average (allowing only 48.5 points per game) in the nation, held an opponent to its fewest points since an 85-20 victory over Southwestern on Jan. 21, 2006.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Penguins connected on 20.3 percent  (12-of-59) of their attempts from floor when the two teams played in the Conlan Center, a 62-34 loss for the Penguins.
The Lady Penguins conclude their two-game road trip on Friday in St. George, Utah where they play Dixie State College. Game time is 4:00 p.m. Pacific time. That game will be broadcast live online at www.dominicanathletics.com/livevideo.
