Late Goals Cost Penguins in Loss to CBU

Dennis Maric scored his first goal of the season in the Penguins' 4-1 loss to CBU on Monday.
Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just when the Dominican University of California men's soccer team made it interesting on Monday, host Cal Baptist made its move and ran past the Penguins 4-1 in a Pacific West Conference game.

Dominican (0-7-0/0-3-0) was trailing 2-1 midway through the second half after junior Dennis Maric scored his first goal of the season off an assist by freshman Bon-Acosta. Maric and Bon-Acosta played on rival teams (Novato and Marin Catholic, respectively) in the Marin County Athletic League.

However, Cal Baptist (6-2-1/4-0-0) retaliated fast. Osvaldo Bastida scored 1:46 later then scored again at the 71:16 mark for a three-goal cushion, moving them into a first-place tie with Hawai'i Pacific in the PacWest.

“We were trying to press for that second goal and they caught us on a counter,” said Dominican Director of Soccer Jon Delano. “It was a much better performance than we put together the other day [Saturday's 4-0 loss to Cal Baptist], but obviously the score wasn't much different. We were better on the attack.”

Bon-Acosta set up the Penguins' goal by dribbling the ball into the corner. He took a hard hit yet managed to get the ball to Maric, whose left-footed shot from the right side struck the inside of the far post and caromed into the goal.

In the first half, the Penguins were more active and accurate with their passes than they were in Saturday's loss to the Lancers. David Mendez and freshman Mfonabasi Ikpe, making his first start of the season, had scoring chances early as Dominican played Cal Baptist even.

The Lancers finally got on the board at the 20:30 mark of the first half when Michael Salazar kicked the ball past Penguins goalkeeper Casey Gibson with his heel on a rebound after Gibson made the initial save.

Dominican had two more shots – six for the half – after that by Mendez and Kolby Mitnick. After being outshot 16-1 in the first half on Saturday, the Penguins kept better possession of the ball on Monday. They had five shots compared to 10 for Cal Baptist in the first 45 minutes.
Delano replaced Gibson with freshman goalkeeper Erik Anderson in the second half.

Dominican will seek its first win of the season on Thursday when it hosts Chaminade (0-6-1/0-2-0) in a PacWest game at 4:00 p.m.
