Penguins Fall to First-Place Cal Baptist

Freshman Nuri Bon-Acosta had one of the Penguins' two shots on goal in Saturday's loss to first-place CBU.
Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. — For the longest time the Dominican University of California men's soccer team gamely hung in against league-leading California Baptist University in a Pacific West Conference match on the Lancers' home field. However, Cal Baptist (5-2-1/3-0-0) finally cashed in in the second half and dealt the Penguins  (0-6-0/0-2-0)  a 4-0 defeat.

“In the first half, we were a little tentative then we really loosened up and we tried to play in the second half,” said Dominican Director of Soccer Jon Delano.

In the first half, Cal Baptist's Tyler Garrison scored the game's first goal and his first goal of season just five minutes into the contest. Yet that was the only goal allowed by Penguins goalkeeper Casey Gibson though the Lancers outshot Dominican 16-1.

Freshman Nuri Bon-Acosta was the only Dominican player to record a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes while Gibson made six saves.

“We didn't do a very good job of keeping the ball,” said Delano. “In the second half, even though we gave away some goals, we did a much better job of keeping the ball and trying to play.”

In the second half, Cal Baptist, after a 62-minute spell when it took 19 shots, finally scored its second goal. Alex Anderson lifted the Lancers to a 2-0 lead, then teammates Tyler Aagard and Jorge Arreola doubled their advantage in the next eight minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Erik Anderson replaced Gibson at the 78-minute mark to make his career debut after missing the first five games recuperating from a broken leg.

The Penguins plan to be better prepared for the Lancers next time.

“It helps to find what we need to do to be successful on Monday when we play them next,” said Delano. “Defensively we need to tighten some things up and really focus on keeping the ball and be creative when we start to attack.”

Dominican will play the Cal Baptist again on Monday in Riverside. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
