SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball suffered a tough 73-66 loss to Notre Dame de Namur University at the Conlan Center on Saturday evening in Pacific West Conference action.
Aggressive defense by Dominican (5-15/3-7) in the first half forced two shot clock violations by the Argonauts (7-11/4-5) but also resulted in NDNU taking 21 trips to the free throw line, in contrast to just three attempts by the Lady Penguins. NDNU sank 15 of those free throws, helping the Argonauts take as large as a seven-point lead and a 38-36 lead going into halftime.
Senior forward
Shawna Bryant tied it up to open the first half and it remained close until the end. A layup by NDNU's Pilar Mullins would give the Argonauts a one-point lead with 6:34 to go and they would never relinquish the lead. The Lady Penguins were forced to foul and missed all three of their field goal attempts in the final minute, seeing the lead grow from just one to the final seven-point deficit.
For the game, the Argonauts reached the foul line 33 times and made 25 of those attempts. Dominican was sent to the line 13 times but made just five. However, Dominican's 28-of-54 (.519) shooting from the field was the team's best all season.
A trio of Argonaut starters reached double digits. Junior center Emily Fore went 4-of-4 both from the field and the free throw line for 13 points and led all players with 8 rebounds. Junior guard Natellie Saia went 8-of-9 from the free throw line and senior guard Jennica Janssen each also added 13 points.
Freshman forward
Mary Kate Jankowski led all players with a career-high 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The six-footer came off the bench and started the game a perfect 4-for-4 and led all players with 13 points at the half. Graduate guard
Tammy Brawner added a dozen points and senior center
Raquel Gomes went 5-of-8 from the field for 11 points.
The Lady Penguins depart for a two-game road trip to Utah and Ariz., where they will face two nationally ranked teams, Dixie State College on Thursday, Feb. 10, and Grand Canyon University on Saturday, Feb. 12.
