Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —
Te Manu Whakataki "Taki" Te Koi and
Sarah Nelson combined for 29 points coming off the bench and the Dominican University of California women's basketball built a nine-point second-half lead for the second consecutive game yet couldn't put the finishing touches on a victory Tuesday night.
Chelsea Haskey scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the final 13 minutes leading Saint Martin's (6-5) to a 67-61 come-from-behind non-conference win over the upset-minded Lady Penguins (1-7). The Saints outscored Dominican 9-2 in the last 3:10, taking the lead for good, 60-59, on two Haskey foul shots.
“This one was a different game,” said Dominican Head Coach
Brianna Chambers, referring to Saturday night's loss to Cal Maritime. “I'm not happy with tonight's loss but I thought we played more consistently as far as intensity and effort.”
The Lady Penguins lost two starters – leading rebounder
Jasmine Green (ankle) and
Melissa Wise (cut lip) – to injury during the game but Dominican had the lead late in the contest. Nelson, a 6-foot-4 freshman, gave the Lady Penguins their last lead, 59-58, with a hook shot with 3:31 to go. She had 14 points and a game-best eight rebounds and Te Koi, the only senior on Dominican's roster, tallied a team-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She also had a game-high four assists.
Nelson came off the bench to ignite a Dominican comeback from a five-point deficit in the first half. She connected on three of her first four shots then Wise gave the Lady Penguins their first lead of the night, 17-15, on a 3-point shot.
The Penguins boosted their advantage to four points on a fastbreak layup by freshman
Danielle Yamauchi on a pass by Te Koi but Saint Martin's rallied to re-take the lead. Te Koi scored five consecutive points on a 3-pointer and steal and layup then
Lauren Hyatt beat the buzzer to tie the game at 28 at halftime. Te Koi and Nelson combined for 15 of those points.
“The first half was good. Got down, battled back, got up. They battled back. That's basketball. Teams are going to have runs,” Chambers said. “Sarah's been coming along and it's great to have Taki back because she adds energy and that toughness.”
Both players started the second half and it paid off. Te Koi hit a 3-pointer and scored again on a give-and-shot play with Nelson and the Penguins netted the first seven points of the half. After freshman
Ariana Flynn swished a 3-pointer and fed Hyatt for another basket, Dominican amassed a nine-point lead, 43-34, with 15:03 to play.
However, Saint Martin's was more aggressive on the boards, outrebounding Dominican 10-4 on the offensive glass in the second half. The Saints outrebounded the Lady Penguins 49-28 overall for the game.
Dominican returns to the Conlan Center on Friday when it hosts the University of Sioux Falls Cougars (7-1). Game time is 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast with live audio at
