Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team used a full team effort on Tuesday evening to earn a 51-48 victory over visiting Chico State.
After building a 28-19 halftime lead, Dominican (1-4) extended the lead to 14 in the second half but saw the score evaporate to just two points with 40 seconds left. However,
Jasmine Green and
Kimi Nakamura drew fouls and made it to the foul line, knocking down all four of their free throws to build the lead back to six. The Wildcats' Courtney Harrison cut the lead to three just a second later but Dominican held on for the win.
Chico State (2-1) entered play having scored 74 and 62 points in their first two games. Dominican held them to their lowest point total on just 17-of-60 (.283) shooting since Cal State Monterey Bay held the Wildcats to 48 points in February of last season. CSUMB went on to win the CCAA Championship and was the number one defensive team in the nation.
In her first appearance and first start of the season, junior forward
Melissa Wise scored nine points. Freshman guard
Ariana Flynn also scored nine points, all on three pointers. Freshman guard
Danielle Yamauchi and redshirt freshman
Lauren Hyatt added seven points apiece.
Dominican grabbed one more rebound than the Wildcats and was led by Green's nine. Freshman
Sarah Nelson added eight rebounds. Junior guard
Stephanie Carnes also made her first appearance of the season and added three points, three rebounds, and two assists.
“This is a huge win for our program. Anytime that you can beat a team like Chico State you know that you're going in the right direction,” said Head Coach
Brianna Chambers. “We can tell that the players are understanding what they need to do and it's coming together. Ariana, Jasmine, and Sarah played especially well tonight.
The Dominican women head to Turlock on Saturday, November 26 to face another CCAA program, Cal State Stanislaus. Tipoff of the non-conference game is slated for 4:00 p.m.
