Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah — Playing against the last unbeaten team in Pacific West Conference play, the upset-minded Dominican University of California men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking game in the second overtime on Saturday night, losing 1-0 to Dixie State Collge.
Tyler Albretsen tallied the game-winning goal for the Red Storm (5-2-2/4-0-0) at the 101:59 mark, beating Penguins freshman goalkeeper
Erik Anderson from 10 yards out with “a well-taken shot,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano.
The loss ended a two-game winning streak for Dominican (2-8-0/1-4-0).
“It was a really good performance by us. There's nothing more you can ask of ours kids. I thought we were fantastic,” said Delano. “We were very dangerous.”
The Penguins, who entered the game eighth in the conference in shots with an average of 9.89 per game, pressed hard and launched 10 shots at the opposing goal in the first half alone, 16 for the game.
Sophomore captain
David Mendez recorded two shots on goal and nearly set up teammate
Dennis Maric for the game-winner in the first 10-minute overtime period.
“David beat a couple of kids and got in behind and played a ball across to Dennis and Dennis was a little bit off balance. He was playing hurt all night,” said Delano. “He missed it from pretty close range.”
Maric and freshman
Kolby Mitnick both had two shots on goal.
Nuri Bon-Acosta, another Dominican freshman, produced yet another excellent scoring opportunity for the Penguins.
“Nuri got in and kind of chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. It was a really well taken shot but they had a defender who came across and got it,” said Delano. “It was an unbelievable shot and it was a really good play by Dixie State. Everyone thought it was a goal.”
Defensively, Dominican hung in against the Red Storm, who took 24 shots. Anderson had nine saves for the Penguins, including a sensational one in the first half.
“There wasn't a bad player for us tonight,” said Delano. “Collectively it was our best performance.”
Dominican returns to PacWest action on Monday, October 10 in Phoenix where they play at Grand Canyon University. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
“The important thing is it's just another step in our maturation process,” said Delano.
