Box Score ARCATA, Calif. — For nearly 100 minutes on Tuesday, freshman goalkeeper
Erik Anderson and a determined Dominican University of California men's soccer team managed to keep the Humboldt State Lumberjacks from scoring no matter how many times they tried. It took the Lumberjacks 39 shots and 98:49 before junior Zach Hsum Hammond, on his 11th shot of the game, kicked one past Anderson to hand the young Penguins an exhausting 1-0 overtime defeat in a non-conference game.
“Our work rate was good and our commitment to the game was fantastic,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “Defensively they were all over us. Erik was very, very good and made a lot of key saves.”
The Penguins (2-12-0) were outshot 14-3 in the first half then the Lumberbacks launched the first seven shots in the opening 14 minutes of the second half when Dominican started nine freshmen. However, despite being outshot 21-3 at one point and 33-6 in regulation, Anderson and the Penguins forced the game into overtime. Anderson had 16 saves as Humboldt (5-11-0) outshot Dominican 39-7 in the contest, 6-1 in overtime.
Anderson had 16 saves and was aided by excellent play from a quartet of fellow freshmen:
Evan Myers,
Cory Vanderpool,
Fabian Valdez,
Dale Howard, and
Manny Sandoval-Gutierrez.
“The kids were trying to grind through it,” said Delano. “You never want to give the ball up like that but I've got no problems with how hard they worked.”
In some respects, it was a moral victory for the Penguins. Two of the Lumberjacks' victories this season came against California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State East Bay, a team Dominican lost to 2-0 on Sept. 3 in Hayward. By comparison, Humboldt outscored CSUEB 8-1 in their two games but the Penguins proved to a tougher test for the Lumberjacks.
“The biggest thing we take away is how mentally strong we were throughout the whole match,” said Delano.
Sophomore co-captain
David Mendez led Dominican with four shots and the only two the Penguins placed on goal. Freshman
Nuri Bon-Acosta had two shots and sophomore
Robin Goldschmidt had the other.
“We had one [potential goal] cleared off the line early in the second half and we had some other opportunities,” said Delano. “I talked to them after the game about how Humboldt created their own luck a little bit by taking that many shots. Some of them weren't great. Some of them were good. But you have to create your own luck. We passed on quite a few shots we should have taken.”
The Penguins return to Pacific West Conference play on Friday, October 28 when they host BYU-Hawaii in a Dominican “Spirit Week” game at 3:00 p.m. There will be a special live broadcast available at
