Penguins Fall to Experienced NDNU Squad

Nuri Bon-Acosta and the Penguins had a tough go against a veteran NDNU squad on Tuesday.
Box Score BELMONT, Calif.  — Youth was not served well on Tuesday as a freshmen-dominated Dominican University of California men's soccer team ran into an experienced Notre Dame de Namur University team and was dealt a 5-0 Pacific West Conference defeat.

The Penguins (2-11-0/1-7-0) fell behind 1-0 in the first 59 seconds of the game when two of their defenders collided and one of them accidentally headed the ball into the Dominican goal. The Argonauts (7-6-0/3-5-0) didn't let up and built a 4-0 halftime lead by eventually scoring three more goals in a three and a half minute span, one of them by Christobal Montes, who had two in the contest.

Montes was one of six seniors who started for NDNU along with two juniors. Dominican started nine freshmen and had 10 on the field with sophomore David Mendez late in the first half.

“In the first half we were tentative, timid, scared, and we gave up an own goal,” said Dominican Director of Soccer Jon Delano. “In moments like that you've got to persevere and grind your way through difficulty… That own goal set us back on our heels and all of a sudden we were just trying to weather the storm to the best of our ability in the first half.”

The Penguins were outshot 16-1 in the first 45 minutes but freshman goalkeeper Erik Anderson made several excellent saves.

“I thought he was spectacular,” said Delano. “As much as it stinks to give away goals or as hard as it is to give away goals mentally, he kept us in it.”

Freshman Nuri Bon-Acosta recorded Dominican's only shot on goal in the first half. The Penguins had four shots in the second half – two by Mendez and one each by freshmen Cory Vanderpool and Victor Robles.

For the game, Dominican was outshot 27-5 by the Argonauts.

“Their movement is a handful with their front runners and midfielders,” said Delano. “But when you talk about bloodying some young kids like [freshmen] Cory and Fabian Valdez and Evan Myers back there … I don't think in their four-year career they will see better movement [from an opponent].”

The Penguins are off for a week, then they journey to Humboldt State next Tuesday, October 25 for a 1:30 p.m. non-conference game.
