HONOLULU, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team was denied its first Pacific West Conference victory on Monday evening by Chaminade University, falling 63-51 at McCabe Gym.
Chaminade (1-9/1-2) took as large as a 10-point first-half lead before Dominican (2-10/0-2) used a 10-4 run to trim the deficit to 27-23 headed into halftime. The Lady Penguins opened the second half with a three-pointer from senior guard
Kelsey Janusch to cut the Silver Sword lead to a point but Dominican couldn't manage to hold onto the ball or make any more timely shots, falling behind as much as 14 down the stretch.
All in all, Dominican turned the ball over 29 times and shot just 18-of-55 (.327) from the field, including an ice cold 3-of-19 (.158) from deep. Chaminade turned the ball over 10 less times and made two more three pointers than the Lady Penguins. The Silver Swords went 22-of-64 (.344) from the field. The win was Chaminade's first of the season and its first since Dec. 15, 2009 vs. BYU-Hawaii.
Chaminade spread the ball around, resulting in four Silver Swords reaching double digits. Freshman guard Jordan Ahakuelo led all players with 16 points, added 10 rebounds for the double-double, and dished out four assists. Sophomore guard Rachael Rickard scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Jamie Higa scored 13 points and junior center Kayci Will added 10 points. Freshman forward Markeshia Manning led all players with 11 rebounds.

Raquel Gomes each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Jansuch, also a Marin Catholic product, scored seven points in her return after missing Dominican's last game with a concussion.
Dominican will take on BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday, Dec. 12 and finish up the four-game roadtrip through Hawai'i on Friday, Dec. 14 versus Hawai'i Pacific University. Both games are being played at BYU-Hawai'i, whose campus is located on the North side of Oahu in Laie.
