Rohnert Park, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team dropped both matches on opening day at the Seawolf Spike. The Lady Penguins fell 3-1 to Chico State and 3-0 to host Sonoma State, who is ranked #21 in the AVCA Preseason Top 25 Poll.
Chico State (1-0), pegged to finish fifth in the CCAA, went on a 7-2 run midway through the first set and used it to secure the 25-20 win. Dominican used 13 kills in set two and
Sarah Bain dished out 8 of the last 11 Dominican points to help the Lady Penguins secure set two 25-23. Chico State answered with a .421 kill percentage in set three and took the match by putting the Lady Penguins away in 25-19 in set four. Alex Shurtz led Chico State with 14 kills.
The #21 Seawolves (1-0) tallied 13 kills per set and held Dominican to a .103 hitting percentage to hand the Lady Penguins their second loss of the day. Keala Peterson led the Seawolves with 10 kills.
Cayla Morphew posted 19 kills on the day, including 15 against Chico State.
Ria Falealili added 17 kills with 11 coming against the Wildcats. Bain and
Brooke Swingle finished the day with 28 assists and 24 assists, respectively.
Ashley Pittman dug out 20 balls for the Dominican women.
The Lady Penguins return to the court for the second day of the Seawolf Spike on Saturday, September 4 when they face Cal State Stanislaus at 11:15 a.m. That match will be followed by a match versus cross-bay opponent San Francisco State at 3:45 p.m.
