SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team opened Pacific West Conference play on Thursday and pulled a tough draw, Grand Canyon University, who was chosen to top the conference in the preseason coaches poll. The Penguins fell 3-0 at home.
Jaoa Vieiera put the 'Lopes (2-0-1/1-0-0) up with just under two minutes left when he slipped a goal in the bottom right of the net.
Dominican (0-4-1/0-1-0) slowed GCU in the second half but Cordero Young added a pair of second half goals in a span of two minutes to seal the Grand Canyon victory. Kyle Ciliento, coming off a PacWest Player of the Week performance, crossed an assist to Cordero for GCU's third goal.
The Penguins were not at full health, as
Pedro Guevara started but sat much of the game due to illness. Another regular starter,
David Mendez, missed the game with an ankle injury. Guevara still managed to fire off a pair of shots, including one on goal.
Todd Mata and
Alec Ziegler each added a shot on goal.
Goalkeeper
Matthew Carlson made four saves in the loss.
"We wanted to get to halftime tied or ahead," said Dominican Head Coach
Jon Delano. "We weren't at full strength but we need to adjust accordingly."
The Penguins host Dixie State College on Wednesday, September 22. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. with the women's team to follow at 4:00 p.m.
