Lady Penguins Knock off Bethany, Fall to Southwestern and Menlo

Ria Falealili and the Lady Penguins earned their second win of the season with a sweep of Bethany University.

ROCKLIN, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team notched its second win of 2010 with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-18 sweep of Bethany University at the Warrior Classic on Saturday. The Lady Penguins dropped their next two matches of the day — being swept 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 by Southwestern College and 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 by Menlo College — to fall 2-8 on the season.

Dominican started the day strong, hitting .289 in the win over Menlo. Ria Falealili led Dominican with nine kills on 17 attempts. Sarah Bain and Cayla Morphew each added eight kills. Lauren Clark added a solid six kills on seven attempts.

Falealili made 13 more kills in the match versus Southwestern (5-5) but Dominican saw little other offensive production, making just 31 kills on 103 attempts (.155). Jessica Jones and Ashley Pittman were solid defensivley, digging out 16 and 11 balls, respectively.

Morphew led Dominican with 12 kills in the loss to Menlo (2-9) but the Lady Penguins hit an abysmal .076 for the match. Pittman led all players with 19 digs.

Brooke Swingle dished out 64 assists in two matches. Bain set during the Southwestern match and tallied 27 assists on the day. Falealili finished the day with 30 kills. Pittman finished her day with 40 digs.

Dominican returns to the court on Saturday, September 18 to host former California Pacific Conference foe William Jessup University in non-conference play. First serve at the Conlan Center is slated for 7:00 p.m.
