Sacramento, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team secured its first win of the season with a 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-22) victory at former NAIA California Pacific Conference rival William Jessup University on the first day of the Warrior Classic on Friday. The Lady Penguins dropped their second match of the day, falling 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) to NAIA member Vanguard University.
The Lady Penguins (1-6) stayed deadlocked in the first set with the Warriors (0-10) until
Lauren Clark laid down a service ace with a one-point lead to take set one 25-23. From there, Dominican battled to another close victory in set two, edging the Warriors 27-25. Set three was more of the same but Dominican again came out on top to earn the set 25-22 and take the match.
Dominican had a hard time connecting in their match with Vanguard, placing just five kills while making six attack errors in the first set. There were plenty of opportunities in the second set but Dominican made just 12 kills on 39 attempts. On the match, Dominican combined for just a .100 hitting percentage.
Cayla Morphew led the Lady Penguins over the Warriors with 12 kills and finished her day with 18 kills.
Jessica Jones tallied 11 kills against William Jessup and finished with 13 kills on the day.
Brooke Swingle dished out 49 assists over the two matches.
The Lady Penguins return to the court on Saturday for the second and final day of the Warrior Classic, where they will face Southwestern University and former CalPac foes Bethany University and Menlo College.
