SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team lost a close 2-1 decision to visiting St. Martin's University in non-conference play on Friday afternoon.

The defending GNAC champs scored in the first five minutes when Xan Nixon found Dylan Gaydosh from the outside of the box. Dominican (0-3-1) roared back when Pedro Guevara launched an unassisted goal from 18 yards out in the twelfth minute.

Nixon recovered the ball from a broken play in the twentieth minute and put the Saints (2-0-2) ahead for good.

Dominican made several attempts at the offensive end, placing nine corner kicks during the course of the game.

Dominican keeper Matthew Carlson, coming off a week where he earned PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honors, made five saves on the day, including a sensational leaping punch in the seventy fifth minute to keep the game close.

“I thought that we responded well after giving away the first goal. The second goal was unfortunate and we need to be better in those situations.” said Dominican Head Coach Jon Delano of his team's performance on Friday. “It was a decent showing against a team that won the GNAC last season.”

The Penguins host Grand Canyon University in the Pacific West Conference doubleheader opener on Thursday, September 16. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Field with the women to follow at 4:30 p.m.
