SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team avenged an early season loss on Tuesday night in Pacific West Conference play with a 74-58 defeat of BYU-Hawaii.
Dominican (6-20/3-12) set the tone by jumping out ahead 10-3 early and led by as much as 18 points in the first half. The Lady Penguins shot their way to a 35-20 halftime lead on 12-of-29 (.414) shooting and clamped down defensively, forcing 13 first-half Seasider (9-14/5-8) turnovers while limiting the Seasidersto just 7-of-19 (.368) shooting.
Kimi Nakamura's three-pointer pushed Dominican's lead to 20 points with 13 minutes to play in the second half and the Lady Penguins never looked back. The Seasiders trimmed the lead to 10 points with eight and a half minutes to go but that's as close as the game would get. The Penguins pushed the lead back to 20 three minutes later on a pair of
Melissa Wise free throws and took a commanding 22-point lead on one of
Alisha Flaaten's three three-pointers with four minutes left. From there, Dominican cruised to the 16-point victory.
Flaaten led all players with 15 points.
Raquel Gomes went 5-of-7 from the field and tallied 12 points. Wise went 4-of-5 from the field and added 10 points.
Michaelia Baskerville,
Kiley Berlinksi, and Nakamura all added eight points apiece in the victory.
Richelle Fenebock led the Seasiders with 13 points. Dara Tompkison and Zsazsa Lawson each chipped in 10 points apiece in the loss.
Dominican's 2009-2010 basketball schedule, its inaugural season in NCAA Division II, will conclude with a home games on Saturday night, March 6 against Chaminade University. The team's seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
