HONOLULU, HAWAII — Free throws worked against the Dominican University of California women's basketball team on Saturday. On Monday night, the Lady Penguins made seven free throws in the final minute to collect a 72-64 Pacific West Conference victory over Chaminade University at McCabe Gymnasium.
Chaminade (1-14/0-8) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before
Raquel Gomes got Dominican (5-14/2-6) in the book at 17:30. Chaminade, however, pushed the lead to 22-11 on five straight points from Megan Kamehiro. Dominican responded with an eight-point run that pulled the Lady Penguins within three and
Alisha Flaaten tied the game at 28-28 when she buried a three-pointer from the top of the key with 7:39 on the clock. Chaminade regained the lead before
Kiley Berlinksi's postup gave Dominican the 34-33 edge. Another Flaaten three-ball extended the lead to 37-33 but Chaminade clawed back again to tie the game at 37-37.
Kelsey Janusch buried one of Dominican's five first-half three-pointers to give Dominican the 40-37 lead with 1:37 left in the half. Flaaten was fouled on a drive at the buzzer and hit both free throws to send the Lady Penguins into halftime with the 42-37 lead.
Gomes started the second half with a bank shot and
Michaelia Baskerville added a pair of free throws while the Lady Penguins held Chaminade scoreless until the 15:40 mark. Dominican took a 54-44 lead with 11:30 to play when
Kelsey Janusch connected with Flaaten on one of her six three-pointers. Chaminade bounced back with a seven-point run to trim the gap to 54-51 but Flaaten scored five straight points to push the lead right back. Three straight Chaminade free throws again cut the lead to three but the Silver Swords made a costly shot clock violation with 1:36 to go. After that, Dominican clamped down and held Chaminade scoreless while making seven free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
Flaaten collected a game-leading 24 points, including a perfect six-of-six at the free throw line, as she inches within 37 points of tying the women's basketball all-time scoring record. Gomes added 14 points and six second-half rebounds.
Shawna Bryant added 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Megan Kamehiro led the Silver Swords with 16 points. Samantha Saito added 10 points.
The Lady Penguins now travel to Hawai'i Pacific University, where they'll play a 5:30 p.m. Hawaiian/7:30 p.m. Pacific game on Feb. 10. Dominican finishes the road trip by hopping islands to face the University of Hawai'i, Hilo on Feb. 12
