LAIE, HAWAII — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team was plagued by second half foul trouble, falling 78-64 to BYU-Hawaii in Pacific West Conference play on Saturday night at the Cannon Center.
Both teams took a while to get warmed up, with BYU-Hawaii (7-11/3-5) finally breaking the seal at 17:42 to take the early lead.
Michaelia Baskerville got Dominican (4-14/1-6) on the board at 16:55 and it was a balanced half from there. Dominican fell behind 24-18 on a BYU-Hawaii layup but Dominican scored the last six points of the half to tie the score at 27-27 at halftime.
In the first half, Dominican made 10-of-25 field goal attempts compared to 10-of-26 by the Seasiders. Dominican went to the line 13 times while BYU-Hawaii took a dozen free throw attempts. BYU-Hawaii held a 20-19 rebounding advantage and made one less turnover.

Kiley Berlinski gave Dominican its first lead a few seconds later with 17:12 to play. The lead exchanged hands again until
Alisha Flaaten regained the lead, 33-32, on a three-pointer at the 14-minute mark. The Seasiders took advantage of Dominican's fouls, getting into the bonus with 13:48 remaining in regulation and knocking down a pair of free throws to take the lead back. A
Kimi Nakamura three-pointer gave Dominican the 38-36 lead at the 12-minute mark but Dominican would fight from behind the rest of the night. The Seasiders used a 24-10 run that started at the 10-minute mark and lasted the next eight minutes. Nakamura made Dominican's final three buckets, all nothing-but-net three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as the Dominican women dropped their fifth straight decision.
Dominican made 11-of-31 second half field goal attempts to the Seasiders' 12-of-24 but the difference came at the free throw line. BYU-Hawaii converted 27 of 30 free throws while Dominican made just 12 trips to the free throw line. The Lady Pengins ended up outrebounding BYU-Hawaii 38-35 but made 29 turnovers while forcing 20.
Flaaten led all scorers with 18 points.
Nakamura went a perfect 4-of-4 from deep to finish her night with 14 points.
Raquel Gomes and Baskerville each added double-doubles in the effort. Gomes scored a dozen points and 10 rebounds and Baskerville went for 10 and 10.
Richelle Fenenbock led BYU-Hawaii with 13 points. Machina Gago and Drew each added 12 points.
The Lady Penguins face Chaminade University on Monday, Feb. 8. The game, which will be played at McCabe Gym is slated at 5:30 p.m. Hawaiian/7:30 p.m. Pacific. On Feb. 10, they'll face Hawai'i Pacific University and finish the road trip by hopping islands to face the University of Hawai'i, Hilo on Feb. 12.
