Lady Penguins Fall to First-Place HPU

BOX SCORE

HONOLULU, HAWAII — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team came out strong but was unable to stop Hawai'i Pacific University's inside presence as the first-place Sea Warriors went on to win 74-64 in Pacific West Conference play on Wednesday night at Maryknoll School.

The Lady Penguins (5-15/2-7) jumped out to a 10-4 lead before HPU (14-4/10-0) tied the game on a Mana Hopkins jumper at 13:53. Kimi Nakamura's three-poitner put the Lady Penguins ahead 17-13 and Dominican held the lead until the 23-second mark when HPU tied things at 31-31. Kelsey Janusch nailed a three-pointer with 2 seconds left on the clock to send Dominican into the locker room with a 34-31 halftime lead.

Paris Gravely tied the game for HPU with a basket at the 16:45 mark and five straight Gravely points put the Sea Warriors ahead, 43-40. Another Gravely bucket with eight and a half minutes to play put HPU up 59-47 and Dominican was never able to quite catch up. An Alisha Flaaten layup cut the lead to 70-64 but four free throws by Mackenna Karasawa put the game out of reach.

Flaaten finished her night with 13 points, putting her just 24 points from tying Jennifer Roger Fernandez's all-time women's basketball scoring record. Raquel Gomes added 10 points in the loss. Shawna Bryant and Nakamura each added nine points, with Bryant pulling down a quarter of Dominican's 24 rebounds.

Gravely led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Jazzmin Awa-Williams added 16 points and Britni Ronolo added 11 points and 9 of the Sea Warriors' 46 rebounds.

The Dominican women complete their road trip in Hawai'i with a game against University of Hawai'i, Hilo on Friday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
