SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team fell to NCAA Division I San Jose State University 87-40 in exhibition play on Saturday night.
Dominican was held to .204 shooting from the field but did shoot .300 from behind the three-point line. The Spartans didn't shoot particularly better, going .431 from the field but .500 from downtown.
Freshman
Kayla Valentine led the Lady Penguins with an eight-point effort. Junior
Taki Te Koi added six points, all in the second half, and two steals. Junior
Allie Jordan came off the bench to tally six points for Dominican. Senior
Kelsey Janusch pulled down half a dozen rebounds to lead the Lady Penguins on the boards.
At the half, only one Spartan was in double digits but by the game's end four reached that plateau. Ajhanai Newton came off the bench and went 4-of-5 from the fiend, including a perfect 3-of-3 from deep, and 10-of-12 from the free throw line to lead all players with 21 points. Sara Plavljanin and Myesha Broaden both came off the bench to add 17 points and a dozen points, respectively. Starting forward Brittany Johnson scored 10 points in SJSU's victory.
Dominican will have its last chance to iron out the kinks on Tuesday, November 9 when the Lady Penguins travel to NAIA Division II Holy Names University. Tipoff against the former California Pacific Conference foe is set for 6:00 p.m. in Oakland.
