SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — With 18.2 seconds remaining, it appeared that sophomore
Melissa Wise's layup would complete an incredible comeback for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team in exhibition play against Menlo College. However, In the closing seconds, the Oaks' junior Erika Garcia drove an open lane for the game-winning basket to give the 73-72 lead for good to Menlo.
After calling timeout, Dominican had one chance for a winning basket. Unfortunately, upon a sloppy inbound play from a deep throw down the court, Menlo junior Erika Garcia stole the ball, sealing the game.
Three-point baskets were instrumental in the comeback for Dominican. Down 68-56, sophomore
Kimi Nakamura hit a three point basket to cut the lead to nine. Shortly thereafter, sophomore
Kelsey Janusch followed with another three-point basket, cutting the Menlo lead to 68-62 with 2:21 remaining in the game.
After two free throws by Menlo's Brittany Simmons, Wise quickly answered with a jump shot. On the following possession, Nakamura brought the Lady Penguins closer, 70-67 with another three-point jumper.
The score was tied with 55 seconds remaining when Nakamura's third three-pointer in a span of 2:07. Nakamura finished the night with 12 points, all from four three point baskets.
At halftime, the Lady Penguins were behind 45-33. A quick 13-2 run by Dominican was led by junior
Taki Te Koi in the first two minutes of the second half. She had eight of the 13 points during the run which cut the Menlo lead to 47-46. But following a timeout, the Oaks managed to slowly pull away for a while, eventually leading by as much as 14 points. Te Koi also finished with 12 points and also led the Lady Penguins in steals with four. Freshman
Lauren Hyatt's ten rebounds led the Lady Penguins.
Brittany Taylor led the Oaks with 12 points. Kelsey Grozier pulled down eight rebounds in the Menlo win.
The Lady Penguins' next matchup will be another exhibition this coming Saturday, November 6 at NCAA Division I San Jose State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
