HILO, Hawai'i — After blowing a late lead on Wednesday, the Dominican University of California men's soccer team looked headed towards a third consecutive Pacific West Conference match ending in a tie. Instead, the Penguins dug deep and came away with the 2-1 double overtime victory against the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.
It was a pair of sophomores playing hero for the Penguins (3-8-3/3-5-2) in the match's 103rd minute.

Dominican took the early advantage in the 27th minute when freshman
David Mendez scored for the second straight game. The Penguins fended off 15 shots by the fourth-place Vulcans (5-5-2/4-4-2) until the 80th minute when Gene Okamura drilled home the equalizer. Dominican's defense stood its ground over the final 10 minutes of regulation and in overtime, as the Vulcans fired off nine more shots to no avail.

The Penguins complete the five-game road trip to Hawai'i on Saturday, October 23 and look to leave the islands with another win when they visit Hawai'i Pacific University. Kickoff against the Sea Warriors is slated for 12:30/3:30 p.m. Pacific.
