BOX SCORE
HONOLULU, Hawai'i — For the second straight match, the Dominican University of California men's soccer team battled through 110 minutes, resulting in a 2-2 tie during Pacific West Conference play. This time the draw came against host Chaminade University on Monday afternoon.
Jon Fukumoto gave the Silver Swords (1-8-1/0-7-1) the early advantage just six minutes into the game when he scored unassisted. It took the Penguins (2-8-3/2-5-2) 20 minutes later but sophomore
Evan Cordova found
David Mendez for the freshman's first career goal. Nick Ogata put Chaminade back in front at 37:59 to send the Silver Swords into halftime with the 2-1 lead.
Dominican struck at 58:10 when senior captain
Alec Ziegler made the assist to freshman
Jordan Rode for his first career goal. The two teams battled out the remaining 52 minutes without scoring.
Sophomore keeper
Matthew Carlson, coming off a week where he was named to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll, made a pair of saves in the tie.
"The men worked very hard today. Twice we showed great character by going down by a goal," said Dominican Head Coach
Jon Delano.
"Ziegler,
Ryan Vella, and
Derrick Wilkinson all turned in great defensive performances. With
Pedro [Guevara] being out today I thought we had some players step up dictate to our attack," added Delano. " David was excellent in controlling the offensive tempo, and it was good to see him get a goal. Jordan stepped in and created some great opportunities for himself and finally got his goal early in the second half. I am extremely proud of the character our men have shown over the last two games."
The Penguins took 15 shots, nine of which were on goal, compared to just eight and four by the Silver Swords. Dominican also held a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Six yellow cards were handed out in the physical match.
On Wednesday, October 20 the Penguins conclude their tour of Hawai'i with a match at the University of Hawai'i – Hilo. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m./6:00 p.m. Pacific.
