First Place BYU-Hawaii Edges Lady Penguins

Ashley PIttman had a pair of service aces in Dominican's loss to first-place BYU-Hawaii on Monday.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball dropped another tough Pacific West Conference match on Monday evening, falling to BYU-Hawaii in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.

Dominican (2-16/0-7) turned things around from their last few matches and came out of the gates firing. The Lady Penguins built a 5-0 lead and pushed it to 13-7. The Seasiders (8-5/5-1) called a timeout and regrouped, tallying off 11 of the next 13 points to take an 18-15 lead. From there, BYU-Hawaii raced to the finish line and took the set 25-23.

After Dominican built a 20-15 lead in set two, BYU-Hawaii called another momentum stopping timeout. Coming out of the huddle, BYU-Hawaii scored 10 of the next 12 points to come-from-behind and win set two 25-22.

BYU-Hawaii's momentum spilled into set three, taking a 13-4 advantage before Dominican rallied back within five points. But Dominican was unable to catch up and the Seasiders took set three 25-19.

Freshman outside hitter Ria Falealili provided most of Dominican's offense, placing 12 kills in 54 attempts. Fellow freshman outside hitter Hannah Stocking added seven kills and led all players with 15 digs. Freshman liberoAshley Pittman added 11 digs in the loss. Pittman and Lauren Clark each placed two service aces in the effort.

BYU-Hawaii was led by Losaline Faka'osi's 12 kills and Lauren Hagemeyer's 10 kills.

The Lady Penguins return to action on Thursday, October 14 when BYU-Hawaii returns for another match. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by the second annual Midnight Mayhem event at 9:00 p.m. hosted by the Penguin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where fans will be able to get their first glimpses of the 2010–2011 Dominican basketball teams.
