Lady Penguins notch first PacWest Win in Style

Michaelia Baskerville's career high 22 points helped lift the Dominican women to their first-ever PacWest victory.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — It was one for the record books on Saturday night at the Conlan Center, as Michaelia Baskerville scored a career-high 22 points to help power the Dominican University of California women's basketball team to its first-ever Pacific West Conference victory, an impressive 91-64 win over the University of Hawai'i, Hilo.

Baskerville got things going eary for Dominican (4-9/1-0), knocking down a pair of free throws inside the first minute of play. Tammy Brawner took advantage of one of 27 UHH (3-11/0-3) turnovers, laying the ball in on a fast break to give Dominican a four-point lead, and Raquel Gomes' fastbreak layup gave Dominican the early 6-0 advantage. Four straight Vulcans points cut the deficit to one point but the Lady Penguins answered with an 11-0 run. Dominican never relinquished the lead after that, pushing the lead to as large as 14 before heading into the locker room with a 37-25 lead.

Kirsti Imai capped an 8-4 UHH run to trim the Dominican lead to 41-35 early in the second half but the Lady Penguins answered with a 21-9 run to extend the lead to 62-44. Melissa Wise knocked down a pair of free throws with 4:38 to play to give Dominican a 20-point lead, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. A Kiley Berlinksi fast break layup gave Dominican its biggest lead of the night at 34 before UHH finished the game with a seven-point run to trim the final score to 91-64.

The Lady Penguins made 38 of their 76 shot attempts to finish the night shooting 50 percent from the field, including 35 percent from behind the three-point line. The Dominican women also limited turnovers, dishing out 23 assists to just 15 turnovers while recording 16 steals.

Alisha Flaaten made five three-pointers en route to a 19-point performance for Dominican. Brawner added 13 points and Taki Te Koi finished the night with 10 points. Berlinski and Wise each chipped in eight points in the victory. Baskerville also led all players with nine rebounds.

Hini Kimitete led the Vulcans with 16 points. Hotia Vaaimamao added 14 points and Imai added 11 points.

The Dominican women will look for their second win in conference action when they host their third straight home game on Thursday, Dec. 14. Tipoff against visiting Grand Canyon University is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
