Lady Penguins Drop Fourth Straight Decision

BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team suffered its fourth straight double-digit loss, falling 96-68 to Notre Dame de Namur University on Friday night in Pacific West Conference play.

The Argonauts (8-10/4-3) got on the board first but Michaelia Baskerville quickly answered for Dominican (4-13/1-5) with with a layup at the other end. Dominican took a 13-8 lead but things eroded when the Lady Penguins got into early foul trouble. The Argos took a 24-19 advantage as Baskerville picked up her third foul with 10:58 to play. The Argos built the lead to 29-21 before Melissa Wise knocked down a free throw to cut the lead to seven points. Dominican went dormant over the next four minutes, as the Argonauts went on a 20-3 run that that put NDNU up 49-25. Shawna Bryant ended the Lady Penguin drought with a free throw as Dominican finished the half on a 5-2 run to go into the half trailing 51-30.

NDNU shot a sizzling .656 in the first half. Kim Hom went a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, including 4-of-4 from behind the three-point arc to score 16 first-half points for the Argonauts. Meanwhile, Dominican shot just .300. Despite her three fouls, Baskerville led the Lady Penguins with seven first-half points.

NDNU built the lead to 27 in the second half before the Lady Penguins used an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to 69-50. The Argos outscored Dominican 27-18 in the remainder to cruise to the victory.

For the game, the Argonauts shot .549 to Dominican's .365, and outrebounded the Lady Penguins 54-28.

Baskerville led Dominican with 11 points despite fouling out around the 8-minute mark. Kelsey Janusch added 10 points in the loss. Wise, Tammy Brawner, and Raquel Gomes all added nine points to the effort.

, the PacWest's second leading scorer, was held under her 15-point average with 8 points.

Hom led all players with 21 points and went a perfect 8-of-8 on the night, including 5-of-5 from the three-point line. Pilar Mullins added 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting for NDNU. Laura Zasly, the PacWest's third leading scorer reached her average, adding a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Zasly added 16 points and nine rebounds. Nia House also chipped in 12 points in the victory.

The Dominican basketball teams depart next week for a four-game road trip in Hawai'i. Up first is BYU-Hawaii on Feb. 6, followed by games every two days at Chaminade, first-place Hawai'i Pacific, and Hawai'i Hilo.
