Lady Penguin Turnovers Lead to Loss at AAU

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Twenty-four turnovers by the Dominican University of California women's basketball team led to a 75-55 loss to the hands of the Academy of Art University on Saturday night at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, as Dominican dropped its third straight decision.

The Urban Knights (6-10/2-3) scored on their first trip down the floor off an Sondra Stilwell three ball from the corner. Alisha Flaaten answered with a three of her own from the left side to tie the game for the first of seven times in the first half. A Raquel Gomes layup from Flaaten gave Dominican (4-12/1-4) its first lead at 5-3 and a Gomes jumper from the top of the key put the Lady Penguin at 10-7. A Michaelia Baskerville drive from the right side extended the lead to 12-7 before Jessica Nolan pulled AAU to 12-9 with 15:30 to play. Stilwell knocked down her second three-pointer of the half to tie things at 12 at 14:25.  Dominican used a 5-1 run to take a 24-18 lead at the 8:35 mark. Dominican gave the lead right back when AAU answered with an 10-2 run to take the 28-26 lead with 6:25 to go. A 10-point gave the Urban Knights their largest lead of the half at 38-28 with three minutes to go. A Taki Te Koi jumper cut the deficit to 40-33 headed into halftime. The Urban Knights took advantage of Lady Penguins poor ball handling, converting Dominican's 10 turnovers into 11 AAU points. Meanwhile, Dominican turned eight AAU turnovers into just four points.

The Urban Knights set the tone for the rest of the game by opening the second half on a 6-point run before a Tammy Brawner pull up jumper in the paint stopped the AAU run. A nine-minute 17-8 run by the Urban Knights was capped by a Caprice Hall three-pointer from the top of the key to give AAU the 68-48 lead with 4:06 to go. Dominican fell behind by as much as 22 and was never able to get closer than 18, as AAU cruised to the 75-55 victory.

Flaaten scored a team-high 14 points for Dominican but 11 of those points came in the first half. Baskerville added nine points while Kimi Nakamura chipped in eight points in the loss. Melissa Wise pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, as Dominican outrebounded AAU 37-34.

Nolan led all scorers with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Stilwell and Lorraine Etchell each notched 13 points in the victory. Verity Peets went a perfect 4-of-4 to add nine points for AAU.

For the game, Dominican struggled from the field, making just 21-of-63 (.333) field goal attempts while allowing 30-of-59 (.508) shooting by the Urban Knights.

The Dominican women will look to snap their three-game losing streak on Friday, Jan. 29 when they travel to face Notre Dame de Namur University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Belmont.
