BOX SCORE
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Monday turned out to be another historic day for Dominican University of California Athletics, as the men's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over visiting Academy of Art University in the program's first-ever Pacific West Conference match.
The first half was fairly quiet until the 42nd minute, until an apparent Dominican goal was overturned because a Dominican forward was offsides. The two teams entered the break scoreless, with AAU leading 6-3 in shots.
The second was a reversal of fortunes, as Dominican outshot the Urban Knights 7-5. 86 minutes into the match, junior
Shane Huiberts turned a fairly uneventful day into one to remember for Penguin fans, scoring the program's first goal in PacWest play with four minutes left in regulation. He was assisted by
Evan Cordova, who tracked down a blocked shot to find Huiberts in front of the net.
For the game, Dominican mustered four shots on goal, including Huibert's game winner, while AAU took three shots on goal.
Freshman keeper
Matthew Carlson posted his second consecutive shutout, saving both attempts that came his way.
Huiberts and Carlson were both named to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll the previous week for their outstanding play.
Dominican returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 26 when the Penguins face visiting Dixie State College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. with a women's game to follow at 3:00 p.m.
