BOX SCORE
KENTFIELD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team posted its first shutout of the season on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over NAIA Menlo College.
Dominican stymied the Oaks, only allowing two Menlo shots and not a single shot on goal the entire match. The Penguins took 11 shots and placed three on goal. As it turned out, Dominican only needed the one that
Rafael Garcia took.
Pedro Guevara found Garcia down field in the game's ninth minute for the game winner.
Matthew Carlson had a quiet day in goal thanks to the tough defense by the likes of Dominican captains
Alec Ziegler and
Ryan Vella.
"Today really speaks to the work ethic of our players," said Dominican head coach
Jon Delano. "Everybody, from our midfielders to our defense did a fantastic job keeping Menlo from our end of the field and keeping the ball on the ground and at our feet."
With the victory, the Penguins climb to 3-3 while Menlo falls to 0-5.
Dominican begins Pacific West Conference action on Sept. 21 when Academy of Art visits. The game will be played at Forest Meadows Field on the Dominican campus and will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. after a 2:00 p.m. women's match between the two schools.
