BOX SCORE

BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team was rudely introduced to NCAA competition as the Penguins were downed 8-1 by Cal Poly Pomona on Friday afternoon.

The Penguins (0-1-0) were limited by five shots on goal while the Broncos (1-0-0) sprayed 12 shots on goal, scoring on eight of those attempts.

CPP got on the board early with a goal in the eighth minute from the combo of Rigo Cardenas and Tyler Reinhart. The pair coupled for another goal in the 23 minute. Cardenas finished the day with 2 goals and 3 assists for CPP and Reinhart netted a hat trick and a pair of assists.

Senior Esera Vegas found freshman Thomas Clinch for his first goal of the season at the 40-minute mark to trim the CPP lead to 2-1 going into halftime.

Things fell apart for the Penguins in the second half, as the Broncos found the back of the net six times in the final 45 minutes.

Freshman Matthew Carlson played the game's first 68 minutes in the net for Dominican, giving up six goals and posting three saves. Alexander Bolt played the remaining 22 minutes and allowed two goals and made one save.

The Penguins return to the field in non-conference action versus CSU San Bernardino on Sunday at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
