PHOENIX, AZ — The Dominican University of California finished the 2009 season with a loss to Grand Canyon University in the second day of the Baggataway Cup. Grand Canyon outpaced the Penguins, scoring four goals in the first, third, and final quarter, and five goals in the third quarter. Dominican scored a goal in each of the first three quarters and finally found their rhythm in the final period, scoring six goals. With the loss, Dominican finishes the regular season with a 6-9 record. Grand Canyon improves to 3-12.
Junior captain
Lawrence Nardi scored four goals and made three assists in the loss. Nardi has now scored in every game for the Penguins this season and every game of his collegiate career. Freshman
Matt Polizzi posted a hat trick. Freshmen Reed Upson and Corey Botwinick each scored one goal apiece in the loss. Sophomore
Emmett Faricy made two assists.
Jordy Patterson led all players with six goals for Grand Canyon.
“It's been a character building season, and I think we're all excited for our roster to double next spring. The most frustrating part of the building process is behind us, and now that we're moving to the NCAA, the fun part is about to begin,” said head coach Ned Webster.
Dominican will finish the 2009 season with an exhibition game against the Dominican alumni on Saturday, April 25. Faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Field on the Dominican campus. A pregame barbecue will be hosted beforehand and a postgame gathering will be held at the Flat Iron Bar and Grill in San Rafael.
