HAYWARD, Calif. — The season came to an end for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team on Friday afternoon after a 71-63 loss to Menlo College.
Four Lady Penguin starters scored in double digits but it wasn't enough to offset the lopsided rebounding that favored the Lady Oaks. Sophomore center
Raquel Gomes led Dominican with 17 points in 34 minutes of play. Sophomore guard
Janusch made a team-high 8 field goals and finished with 14 points. Guards
Alisha Flaaten and
Taki Te Koi each scored 10 points in the loss.
Senior guard Kelis Fushikoshi led all scorers with 20 points for the Lady Oaks. Katelyn Guild snatched 15 of the 58 Menlo rebounds. The Lady Oaks outrebounded Dominican 58-36, including 19-10 on the offensive glass.
With the loss, head coach Brianna Chambers' squad finishes the season at 14-13 overall, an improvement over her first season's 10-21 mark last season. The Lady Penguins finished third in their final season of Cal Pac conference play at 11-5.
Next season, Dominican will move to NCAA Division II and join the Pacific West Conference. The PacWest consists of Brigham Young University Hawaii, the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific University, Grand Canyon University in Arizona, Dixie State College of Utah, and Notre Dame de Namur University in nearby Belmont, California.
