Lady Penguins come from behind to win big, advance to Friday 's semifinal

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team rode to a comfortable 85-71 win over CSU East Bay on Wednesday night to advance to Friday's Cal Pac semifinals. Five players reached double digits for Dominican, who made 34-of-68 field goal attempts. Freshman forward Shawna Bryant led all players with 18 points and 9 rebounds. All-conference first team guard Alisha Flaaten and Cal Pac Freshman of the Year Taki Te Koi both drained 16 points apiece for the Lady Penguins. Sophomore guard Kelsey Janusch nailed three three-pointers en route to a 15-point performance. Sophomor Raquel Gomes, also a member of the Cal Pac All-Conference team, rounded out Dominican players in double digits with 10 points.

Morgan Hunter also led all players with 18 points and was one of three players to reach double digits for the Pioneers, who fall to 9-18.

Dominican got on the board first but dug themselves into a 15-point hole with 7:30 to play in the first half. The Lady Penguins closed the half on a 12-4 run to trim the score to 39-37 at halftime.

The Lady Penguins went into junior forward Shelly Clermenco twice to start the second half and take a 41-39 lead. Dominican never trailed after that point and outscored the Pioneers 21-7 in the game's final nine minutes.

Both teams shot well, with Dominican shooting .500 from the field and CSU East Bay making .491 of its shots. It was a shooter's game, as CSU East Bay shot 21 three-pointers and made 11 and Dominican went 7-for-12 from three-point land. The Lady Penguins used their opportunities at the free throw line to pull away, making 10-of-12 attempts while CSU East Bay reached the charity stripe just seven times.

Dominican improves to 14-12 overall and advances to Friday's semifinal game versus rival Menlo College, one of two conference opponents to beat the Penguins twice this season. The semifinals and finals are hosted by CSU East Bay and is scheduled to tip at 1:00 p.m. The Dominican men follow at 3:00 p.m. and will face the Warriors of William Jessup University.
