ATHERTON, Calif. — The Dominican University of California basketball team posted its second win of the season on Saturday with a 73-63 non-conference game against NAIA Division II Menlo College.
Dominican (2-3) jumped out to an early 15-9 lead when
Tammy Brawner drained her only three-point attempt of the night. With two minutes to go in the first half, the Lady Penguins extended the lead to 39-24 for the biggest lead of the half. Menlo (2-5) trimmed the halftime lead to 11 with a 6-2 run to close the half at 41-30. The Lady Oaks were limited to just 9-of-29 (.310) first-half shooting while Dominican made half of theirs (14-of-28). Dominican also used a 14-to-8 rebounding advantage to help grow the lead.
Alisha Flaaten added to her 11 first-half points right off the bat, nailing a field goal just 13 seconds into the seconf half. The beginning of the second half remained tight playwise, as Dominican only outscored Menlo by five points in the first ten minutes to maintain a 16-point lead. The Lady Penguins faltered from that point though, as the Lady Oaks tied the game up at 60-60 thanks to a 19-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Stephanie Truong.
Kiley Berlinksi tied the game back and gave Dominican the lead back with two free throws of her own. The next time down the court, Berlinski connected with
Kimi Nakamura for a three-pointer to give Dominican a two-point lead. Two straight
Michaelia Baskerville baskets pushed the Dominican lead to six and four Brawner free throws down the stretch sealed the 10-point victory for the Lady Penguins.
Brawner led all players with 17 points and tallied a team-high six rebounds. Flaaten made three three-pointers and finished the night with 15 points.
Shelly Clermenco went 4-of-8 from the field to finish with 10 points for the Lady Penguins. Nakamura added nine points and Baskerville added eight points in the win.
Four Lady Oaks reached double digits. Truong led Menlo with 12 points.
The Lady Penguins return home to the Conlan Center on Tuesday, Dec. 8 to face Cal Maritime Academy, another opponent from Dominican's former conference, the California Pacific Conference. Tipoff against the Keelhaulers is slated for 7:00 p.m.
