Late First-Half Run by NNU Sinks Dominican Men

Fox Mulholland led the Penguins with 14 points in their 76-63 loss to NNU.

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team lost another tough game on the road, falling 76-63 to Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday in the second night of the Dixie State Classic.

Northwest Nazarene (4-1) got on the scoreboard first at the 19 minute mark when Kendall Gielow drilled one of the team's 10 three-pointers. Dominican (2-5) rallied back to take a two-point lead at 10:49 when Austin Bryan answered with a three-pointer of his own. A Mark Lewis make gave Dominican its biggest lead of the night at 19-14. Dominican was held scoreless for the final 7:37 of the first half and NNU rattled off a 12-0 run to head into the locker room with a 26-19 lead.

The Penguins cut the lead to four at the 13 minute mark on a Xander McNally free throw. Back-to-back three-pointers by Anthony Golden and Drew Eisninger pushed the NNU lead back to ten and another Golden trey extended the lead to 55-42 with 9:29 to play.  A pair of Eisinger free throws gave NNU a 25-point advantage with 4:54 to play. The Penguins closed the game with a 16-4 run and had recorded five of the team's 21 steals.

The Penguins outrebounded NNU 33-32 and forced 27 turnovers.

Fox Mulholland came off the bench to lead the Penguins with 14 points in 22 minutes. Alex Ward added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.

Eisinger led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Golden made four three-pointers to finish the night with 16 points.

After the game, Alex ward was named to the Dixie State Classic All Tournament Team. In two games, Ward scored 22 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, and dished out three assists.

Dominican returns to California to face NCAA Division I Santa Clara University on Friday, Dec. 11. Tipoff against the Broncos is scheduled for 8:15. Tickets are available through Dominican's Alumni Relations office.
