SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team found itself outmatched by a very physical San Francisco State University squad, dropping a non-conference decision 62-40 on Saturday night.

San Francisco State (5-5) led wire-to-wire, scoring the first six points of the night before Alisha Flaaten buried a three-pointer to get Dominican (2-4) on the board. The Gators extended their lead to 10 points with 8:28 to play in the first half when Juliet Masei hit a jump shot. San Francisco State pushed the ball inside for ten first-half points and took advantage of Dominican turnovers to score 12 more points. Only one basket was made by either team in the last 2:41 of the first half – the Gators' Sidney Dobner nailed a jumper with 1:30 to play. While neither team shot well in the first half, Dominican made just 3-of-32 field goals (.094) in the first half. The Gators shot .375 to head into the locker room with the 30-12 halftime lead.

The Gators came out firing in the second half and quickly pushed the lead to 21 in the first minute of the second half.  From there, the Gators pushed the lead to as large as 27 before the Lady Penguins went on a 16-5 run to cut the lead to 47-31 with 7:30 to play. The Gators stretched the lead back to 26 with just over a minute to play before two pairs of free throws by Flaaten and Kelsey Janusch cut the lead to the 62-40 final.

Dominican managed to cut down on turnovers in the second half, committing just seven – resulting in four points – after making 11 first-half turnovers. The Lady Penguins did force 29 turnovers but scored just 15 points off those turnovers.

The Lady Penguins were outmatched around the hoop, with San Francisco State scoring 28 points in the paint to just six by Dominican. The Gators also outrebounded Dominican 65 to 29.

Flaaten went a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line and led Dominican with a team-high 15 points. Janusch added nine points in the loss. Janusch and Raquel Gomes led the Lady Penguins with seven rebounds apiece.

Donisha Tate paced the Gators with a double-double, leading all players with 13 points and 17 rebounds. Dobner added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the victory and Masei finished her night with 10 points. Dominique Hunter and Kalia Wlliams each pulled down 11 rebounds for San Francisco State.
