ST. GEORGE, UT — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team left its mark in the team's final match of 2009 with a 1-0 victory over a Dixie State College squad that came into the match undefeated in PacWest play.
The Lady Penguins (8-9-3/6-6-2) were outshot 15-5 by the Red Storm (12-4/11-1) but managed to place all five on goal, compared to just four by DSC.
Mallory Engelhardt's unassisted shot in the 52 minute came off a deflection and was enough to snap the Red Storm's nearly two-month win streak.
Alicia Paulsen made all four saves to pick up the win and post her fourth shutout of the season.
Mikala Wilkes led the Red Storm with four shots and one shot on goal in the loss.
With the victory, Dominican finishes the season with a .500 conference mark in its first season as a member of the PacWest. Dominican was picked to finish seventh in preseason but will finish at least in sixth place and possibly as high as fourth, depending on unplayed matches between other teams.
