SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team fell short 55-79 in their home opener against Cal Poly Pomona on Monday night. The Lady Penguins, who are making the transition from NAIA Division II to NCAA Division II and the Pacific West Conference, opened the season against a tough CCAA squad picked to finish second their in the Division II conference.

It looked to be a low-scoring affair at the Conlan Center after neither team scored in the game's first three minutes. Megan Ford got the Broncos (2-0) on the board first with a basket in the paint and the Broncos built the lead to 8-0 on an Ebony White shot under the basket. Alisha Flaaten made the back end of aa pair of free throws to get the Lady Penguins in the books at 8-1. Dominican (0-1) cut the lead to a point at 10:20 when Taki Te Koi buried a three pointer. The Broncos fended off the Dominican attack though, outpacing the Lady Penguins 25-15 in the last 10 minutes of the first half. Cal Poly put on an impressive show from behind the three-point line in the first half, sinking eight-of-ten to enter the locker room leading 45-30.

The Lady Penguins gave up 34 points in the second half while putting up 25 on their side of the scoreboard. The Broncos changed their game plan in the final twenty minutes, choosing to go inside on the Lady Penguins. In fact, the Broncos didn't take another three-pointer after their 10 in the first half.  Dominican shot just 31 percent from the field compared to the 60 percent posted by Pomona.

Broncos Head Coach Scott Davis earns the victory in his first game against Dominican since leaving the helm of the Lady Penguins after the 2005 season.

Dominican was led by Flaaten's 15 point. Te Koi added 13 points in the loss. La'Kenya Simon-West and Reyana Colson added 12 points apiece in the win.

Megan For led the Bronco effort with 16 points.

The Lady Penguins continue non-conference action on Wednesday when they face former California Pacific Conference opponent Pacific Union College. Tipoff is at 6:00 p.m. at the Conlan Center. The game will be broadcast live on the internet at http://radio.dominican.edu.
