HONOLULU, HI — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team bounced back from two losses earlier in the week with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at Chaminade University on Saturday.
After a scoreless first half,
Jose Contreras got Dominican (7-9-1/4-6-1) on the board early in the second half with his first goal of the season on the assist from
Shane Huiberts.
The Silver Swords (2-11/1-9) tied the score at the 68 minute and the match went into overtime after both teams failed to score in the remainder of regulation.
Things looked daunting for the Penguins in overtime, as Chaminade fired off four shots in a span of five minutes. But just a minute later Dominican streaked towards the goal and a handball in the box by Chaminade set up a penalty kick for
Pedro Guevara. Guevara sent his team-leading seventh goal into the back of the net for the game winner.
Dominican made the most of their opportunites scoring twice on just five shots, compared to the one goal on 16 shots by Chaminade. The Silver Swords also held a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
Matthew Carlson went the distance in the net for Dominican and made six saves while allowing the one goal.
The Penguins return home to San Rafael to face Notre Dame de Namur at home on Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Field. The match is also Senior Day, where senior
Esera Vegas will be honored for his dedication to Dominican Athletics.
