SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team fell 2-1 against visiting BYU-Hawaii in Pacific West Conference play on Monday afternoon.
With the loss, Dominican's record falls to 5-6-1/2-3-1 while BYU-Hawaii now stands at 4-6-1/3-3-1.
BYU-Hawaii took the early lead in the 15th minute when a shot by Chris McElwee bounced off of Dominican keeper
Matthew Carlson and off of the post for the goal. Just four minutes later, Collin Walch placed another goal in the back of the net to give the Seasiders the early 2-0 lead.
With just seven seconds left in the first half, the Penguins looked to theaten.
Pedro Guevara's shot was saved but
Garrett Mitchell placed the rebound back towards the net. Seasider Kevin Fronk received a red card when he stuck his hand out to block Mitchell's shot. Guevara squirted the resulting penalty kick into the left side of the net to go into halftime trailing 2-1.
Dominican outshot BYU-Hawaii 7-4 in the second half but big saves by BYU-Hawaii's Cory Cosgrave at the 87 and 88 minutes preserved the win for the Seasiders.
The Dominican men return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 14 when the University of Hawai'i at Hilo visits. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. with a women's match following at 4:00 p.m.
