A native of Amsterdam, Poorta joined the women’s tennis coaching staff as an assistant for the 2011–12 season and was named head coach in spring 2013. She was a three-time all-WCC player at Saint Mary’s College and the first Gaels player to be named conference player of the year and invited to the NCAA Singles Championships, where she advanced to the second round.
Poorta, who holds a degree in kinesiology, was named the 2011 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and ranked as high as No. 45 during her senior season for the Gaels. She accumulated a 14-7 singles record, including a perfect 8-0 mark against WCC opponents, playing all but one match at the No. 1 spot. She upset top-ranked Jana Juricova of Cal on Jan. 23 in the final day of the Cal Winter Invitational and was named the WCC Player of the Month for March after going 5-0 and not dropping a set the entire month.
Poorta, who is a certified fitness trainer, continues to play competitively. She plans to play club tennis professionally this summer in Germany and Holland. She was the third-ranked Dutch player in her country as an 18-year-old and was among the Top 20 in seniors.
“I have been fortunate to have great coaches in my past and I want these players at Dominican to get the same coaching experience as I did,” Poorta said. “I’m very excited to be a part of this program and I want to contribute as much as I can to get this team to a higher level.”
