Rutherford, an East Bay Area native, played four years of Division II soccer at Cal State Monterey Bay, where he graduated with a bachelors degree in education. He served as team captain and earned Student-Athlete of the Year honors at the University in 2001. He earned his masters degree in kinesiology from San Francisco State.
