Pengs Take Down Warriors In Friday Split

ARCATA, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball bounced back Friday afternoon at the Redwood Classic, taking down PacWest opponent Jessup 3-1 before their match with Humboldt at Lumberjack Arena. The Penguins opened the day strong, taking the first set 25-17 before Jessup answered in the second, but Dominican would go on to win the final two sets 25-21 and 25-20.

DUC 3, JES 1

Senior Alexis Schwartz led the Pengs offensively against the Warriors, putting together a team-high 17 kills, the second most she's scored in 2026 and the fourth most in her career. Cierra Ray followed with nine kills while Jesaria Conley-Hudson added seven.

The black and gold took control of the opening set, hitting .241 as a team and holding Jessup to a .135 hitting percentage. Dominican continued to battle in the third set, overcoming a tight offensive set to take it 25-21 and move within one set of the victory.

Dominican closed out the match in the fourth set behind a strong offensive performance, recording 15 kills while hitting .282. Chloe Cruz led the Pengs with 19 assists while Bella Vertudez added 16.

Defensively, Sophia Bernabe came up big for the Penguins, collecting a match-high 25 digs. Schwartz added 13 digs while Cruz recorded 12. At the net, Kristina Atonio led Dominican with two blocks.

HUM 3, DUC 0

Senior Alexis Schwartz once again led the Penguins in the offensive category, collecting a team-high 15 kills against the Lumberjacks. Ashlyn Daugherty and Cierra Ray each added five kills.

DUC battled Humboldt closely in the opening set, but the Lumberjacks were able to take the first frame 25-22. Dominican continued to fight in the second set, pushing Humboldt beyond the usual 25 points before the host team eventually secured the set 29-27.

Dominican found its offensive rhythm in the third set, hitting .222 while collecting 13 kills. The Pengs were led by Schwartz, while Daugherty came up big at the net with three blocks. Kristina Atonio added another block for Dominican.

Defensively, Sophia Bernabe led the way with 18 digs while Ray followed with 14. Schwartz added nine digs to go along with her team-high 15 kills. Chloe Cruz paced the Penguins with 13 assists, while Melena Wong added nine.

Dominican now enters the last day of the Redwood Classic tomorrow, squaring up against a 1-1 Rollins College team that also took down Jessup earlier in the tournament.
