Penguins finish regular season on a high

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis rode a wave of momentum in singles play to a 5-2 victory over Stanislaus State to conclude its regular season Saturday at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

Maiah White and Emi Mikami got the Warriors (6-8) off to a strong start as they won No. 3 doubles 6-3 with Abbigail Mulick and Emma Yu taking No. 1 doubles 7-5 to push their team into the lead heading to singles play. The Penguins (10-8) began its turnaround as Lorenza Foster-Simbulan quickly grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 6 singles to tie the team score. Kaylee Lopez kept it rolling as she topped Parker Orlando 6-4, 6-3 in No. 4 singles while Maria Gavrilov was close behind with a 6-4, 6-3 victory of her own pushing Dominican a single match away from clinching the team victory.

Maiah White was able to briefly stem the tide for Stanislaus State as she won 6-1, 7-5 on the fifth court, but there was no stopping the Penguins in their final home match of the season. Deepalakshmi Vanaraja and Katrine Damkjaer traded sets to open the match with Vanaraja opening with a dominant 6-1 victory and Damkjaer answering with a narrow 7-5 victory in the second set. Vanaraja followed the same script as the day before as she quickly found her form again in the third set to pull away for a 6-3 victory and seal the set for Dominican. Sofia Acuña put a bow on the victory in No. 2 singles as she held off Mulick 7-6 (2), 6-4.

The Penguins will have a week and a half to heal and prepare for the PacWest Championships at Surprise Tennis Racquet and Tennis Center in Surprise, Arizona beginning Wednesday, April 15. Dominican will await its final seeding for the tournament in the coming week.
