Penguins fall to Eagles, split season series

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball dropped both games of its Tuesday doubleheader with Biola at Penguin Field, falling 9-3 in the opener and 8-0 in five-innings in game to split the season series.

Taylor Rodriguez led the Penguins at the plate across the two games, going 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Tiare Guerrero finished 3-for-6 and scored twice. Dominican also got a pair of hits in the second game from Jadyn Magnuson and Annabelle Burke as part of a seven-hit effort in the finale.

Dominican struck first in the opener, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Guerrero singled up the middle past the glove of a diving shortstop and moved to second on a groundout.  Rodriguez brought her home as she singled on a blooper just past the glove of the shortstop again to take the lead while advancing to second on the throw home. Aneesa Brewer followed with an RBI single through the left side to put the Penguins in front 2-0 heading to the second inning.

Biola answered with a run in the second on a fielder's choice before taking control with three runs in the fourth. Dominican got one back in the fifth when Rodriguez drove in Guerrero again on a single to left, trimming the deficit to 5-3.

The Eagles added a run in the sixth and broke the game open with a three-run homer in the seventh to quash any comeback hopes.

Biola carried its momentum into game two, scoring once in the first before pushing six runs across in the third to build a 7-0 lead. The Eagles added one more run in the fifth to close out the five-inning result. Dominican put together chances throughout the game and finished with seven hits, including multiple-hit efforts from Guerrero and Burke, but could not find the clutch hits needed to cut into the lead.

The Penguins will return to action on Thursday, April 23 with a doubleheader at Menlo beginning at noon at Wunderlich Field in Atherton, California.
