HONOLULU – Dominican softball finished off a sweep of Hawai'i Pacific on Monday as it won 11-3 in six innings and coming from behind for an 8-7 victory to cap off the day at Sand Island Park.
Annabelle Burke led the Penguins (11-13, 6-6 PacWest) going 4-for-8 with a home run, five RBI and a stolen base.
Tiare Guerrero was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the first game, scoring four runs on the day, while
Leila Benson went 2-for-2 with three RBI in the second game.
Nayellys Torres-Gonzalez (3-4) earned the victory in the first game holding the Sharks (4-14, 2-8 PacWest) to three earned runs in four innings of work while getting the save in the second game.
Mia Souza pitched three scoreless innings in relief in the second game to move to 2-0 on the season for Dominican.
Game one
HPU struck first as Taryn Hirano tripled to left and Danielle Cote brought her home two batters later as she doubled to center for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Torres-Gonzalez settled in and caught the next batter swinging before Guerrero ended the frame as she secured a line drive back to short.
Morgan Heggstrom reached on an error in the top of the third and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt to get the Penguins in scoring position. Guerrero brought her home as she singled on a little flare to right field that was mishandled by the outfielder allowing Guerrero to advance to third on the play. Guerrero scored on a wild pitch to take the 2-1 lead, but Dominican was not done yet.
Kate Tobola walked and
Annabelle Burke hit a ball over the right fielder's head all the way to the fence and beat the throw home for an inside the park home run and the 4-1 lead.
Kelissa Lee singled to left and Heggstrom walked to put a pair on for the Penguins in the top of the fourth. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance and Lee scored on a groundout. Guerrero then reached on an error to bring home another run for the 6-1 lead. Naomi Cummings doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning and then scored on a single to center to trim the deficit to 6-3 heading to the fifth.
Abalos was hit by a pitch and singled on a perfectly placed bunt between the pitcher and third base to lead off the top of the sixth. Heggstrom walked and Guerrero singled to bring home Abalos.
Aneesa Brewer singled up the middle to bring home two more runs to keep the hit parade going. A groundout moved the runners up to second and third and Tobola dropped a successful sacrifice squeeze to push the lead to seven. Burke hit a fly ball to center field to bring in Guerrero for the 8-run lead, and
Hannah Escalante retired the final three batters on nine pitches to close out the victory.
Game two
Hirano again led off the game with a hit with Miquela Leopoldo bringing her home on a triple to right. Olympia Jara brought home Leopoldo on a sacrifice fly to center to take a 2-0 lead. Dominican kept knocking at the door, but could not quite bring in a run until the top of the third. Guerrero walked to lead off the third and promptly stole second before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Tobola hit a fly to center to give Guerrero enough time to tag and score to cut the deficit in half.
The Sharks opened a large lead in the bottom of the fourth with the help of five walks as Olympia Jara doubled to right to cap the five run frame to make it 7-1. Heggstrom and Brewer doubled on back-to-back at bats to get one run back and Benson singled to center to bring home Brewer to trim the deficit to four runs.
Alexis Abalos scooped a groundball in the bottom of the fifth and tagged a runner before throwing to first for an inning ending double play.
HPU retired the first two batters in the top of the sixth until the same spot in the lineup sparked another rally. Heggstrom walked and Brewer singled up the middle to start the rally.
Marina Medina entered to pinch hit and singled to load the bases with Benson bringin home two on a single to left field. Tobola walked to load the bases again and Burke singled up the middle to bring home two runs with the throw to third hitting off a sliding Tobola and deflecting into foul territory with Tobola getting up and running home for the 8-7 lead.
A pair of walks put the tying run in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Torres-Gonzalez stepped in and got Jade Retuta to line the ball back to Abalos at second who through back to first for the game-ending double play with Torres-Gonzalez getting the save.
Dominican will begin its final series of the road trip Tuesday as it takes on Chaminade after the team moved games up a day at Sand Island before a storm pattern moves in over Oahu with first pitch set for noon Hawaiian Time.
