Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Newkirk leads Pengs past Bearcats

LEBANON, Illinois.- Dominican women's lacrosse (9-3, 1-0) will be flying back to California with all smiles as they dropped the Bearcats of McKendree University 12-8 Tuesday morning. Senior captain Morgan Newkirk led the black and gold offensive attack collecting a game high 5 goals pushing her season total to 28.

The Penguins jumped out of the gates strong to begin the game as they scored the first six points of the game, all in the first. Graduate student Ryan Bionda would get the black and gold started when she called her own number scoring within the first two minutes. Then it was Newkirk scoring her first of five goals a couple minutes later when she took it herself finishing with a nice shot past the Bearcats goalkeeper.

Then it was the Canadian connection going to work for the next point as Canada natives Chelsea Johnson dished it to Bionda who finished the play off for the Pengs third point of the game. Newkirk, the San Diego native, would finish the quarter off by finding the back of the net with 12 seconds left giving the black and gold the 6-0 lead. Dominican would never look back.

Kyra Evans, the fellow San Diego native, was right behind Newkirk on the day as she posted three goals while also scooping up a team high three ground balls. Olivia Johnson, the captain out of Washington, once again dazzled in the draw department as she won a game high 14. This is now her third straight game collecting 10 or more draw controls.

Kate Baell, the freshman from Minnesota, got the nod in the cage for Dominican and came up with seven saves. Sienna Prak-Perry, Emma Roy, and Newkirk were all right behind Evans in the ground balls as they scooped up two apiece.

Dominican will wrap up their regular season April. 13th as they travel to Chapman at 11 a.m.
