Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dominican fights FPU tough on senior day

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball (17-11, 10-7) hosted the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon with everything to play for. Nick Medeiros, Jorge Ochoa, Darius Best, Nanik Tagore, and Omari Davis were all honored before the game for senior night.

The Igloo was jumping for the final game of the regular season, game No. 28. Win and you're in. Everything both teams want when the calendar is about to flip into March madness.
The black and gold would feed off the energy from the home crowd as they went on a 10-0 run after the Sunbirds would collect the first two points of the ballgame. It started with a Stephen Ransom nice driving lay-up and then on the other end, Ransom was a force protecting the paint swatting away a couple of FPU's ill-advised shots.

Then it was one of the seniors Medeiros who would start to heat up ending the run with the final four-points. Medeiros showed off his offensive arsenal with a hard driving lay-up, and then stepped back in the paint to show off his jumper. Fellow senior Omari Davis would get into the offensive action for the Pengs when he drained a three-pointer over the outstretched arms of the FPU defender. Moments later Davis confidently stepped into a jumper to extend Dominicans early lead.

Towards the end of the first half the black and gold offense was running through Medeiros and Ransom as they helped maintain the Pengs lead. Going into half, Dominican held a three-point advantage.
Starting the second and final half of the regular season it was the Sunbirds who would collect the first couple of buckets. The Penguins would halt FPU's momentum by driving hard in the lane and forcing them to foul them which sent them to the charity stripe. Then Ransom would bring the crowd to their feet when he received a nice dish from Best and slammed it home to give the good guys the one-point lead.

Just like he did in the first, Austin Johnson would step into a critical three-pointer to regain the momentum and the lead for the black and gold. The second half would continue to be back and forth with no team having a lead bigger than three.

As the game was winding down it would be the Sunbirds who claimed the largest lead of the game, 10 points. They were led by Brandon Gibson Jr. who collected most of the points. However, the Pengs wouldn't give in as they answered with an 8-0 run in the last two minutes led by tough defense. The three seniors of Best, Medeiros, and Ochoa would lead the charge each all cashing in on jumpers. In the end, it was FPU who would come out on top 71-69.
