ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis opened the season strong as it defeated Jessup 7-0 Friday morning at Johnson Ranch Sports Club.
The Penguins (1-0) started with an advantage needing only one win in doulbes as they took No. 3 singles via a walkover. Deepa Vanaraja and Sofia Acuña quickly claimed the doubles point for their team with a 6-1 victory over their Warrior (0-1) competitors, while
Lorenza Foster-Simbulan and
Maria Gavrilov led 4-2 on court one as the match moved to singles play.
Yet again Dominican started with an advantage as
Bernadine Salvatierra claimed a point via walkover. Gavrilov was the next to finish claiming a 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles over Giselli Reschke with Vanaraja finishing moments later with a. 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles over Rylie Maloney to clinch the victory for the Penguins.
Foster-Simbulan continued Dominican's dominance in the match as she dispatched Danielle Akabane 6-0, 6-2 in No. 4 singles.
Maya Cooper added a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 5 singles and Acuña put the bow on the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Briana Smith in her first ever match at No. 1 singles for the Penguins.
Dominican will be back in action Saturday as it takes on Biola in Hawai'i at a site and time to be determined in a rematch of last year's opening round in the PacWest Championships for the Penguins.
